Myths and Misconceptions about Plastic Injection Moulding

Common myths about plastic injection moulding

Plastic injection moulding is a popular method of production that involves injecting molten plastic- formed from melted plastic pellets - into a mould to create a specific shape. In recent years, this method of manufacturing has become increasingly popular and is used to produce a wide variety of components, anything from cups to cupboard handles. Despite its widespread use, there are a number of myths and misconceptions around plastic injection moulding, which need to be debunked!

Misconception 1: Plastic injection moulding is unsustainable

As the world becomes increasingly focused on environmental impact, it is important to consider the sustainability of manufacturing processes. Plastic is often criticised for having a significant impact on the environment; however, plastic injection moulding isn’t necessarily unsustainable. In fact, it can be considered a highly sustainable method of production, as the process uses only the exact amount of plastic required, eliminating offcuts and minimising waste. Additionally, recycled plastic can be melted down and reused in injection moulding, further enhancing its sustainability.

Misconception 2: Plastic injection moulding is only suitable for large production batches.

Whilst plastic injection moulding is often associated with mass production - where large quantities of identical products are made with the same mould - this is not always the case! The process allows for the efficient creation of moulds, making it possible to manufacture small production batches or bespoke products. At Insignia Manufacturing, we take pride in offering tailored solutions, whether it is for large scale production or a limited batch.

Misconception 3: Plastic injection moulding is a lengthy process.

Some manufacturing methods can involve long lead times, which can slow down projects. However, plastic moulding is a relatively fast process. Once created, moulds can be reused multiple times, and the melting, injection, and cooling stages of the process happen relatively quickly. While intricate and highly detailed moulds may take longer to manufacture, simpler designs can be produced efficiently.

Misconception 4: Plastic injection moulding is low quality.

People often assume that because plastic injection moulding is associated with mass production, this means quality will suffer. However, this is not true; a great deal of care and precision goes into the plastic injection moulding process. Quality does not suffer, and high standards are maintained even though there are often a great deal of quantities produced.

Misconception 5: Injection moulding materials are limited

Although plastic is often considered an unsustainable material, injection moulding is not just limited to plastic alone. There are a number of different plastics that can be used, including recycled plastics. Additionally, certain metals can also be used. Choosing the best material depends on the specific application and product requirements you require.
